Feeding Your Baby

How do I ... feed my baby?

 by Vincent Iannelli, MD

You should always hold your baby during a feeding. Even when he is older and able to hold the bottle on his own, you should continue to hold him and avoid propping the bottle during feedings.

Also, hold the bottle so that the tip is always filled with formula. This will prevent your baby from swallowing a lot of air.

Burping your baby every few ounces can prevent stomach distention and discomfort.

At first, he will be feeding on demand. Later you can get on more of a schedule of feedings every three to four hours.
